How to avoid common problems resulting from CPAP treatment?

A Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine is the most common treatment for reducing the symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The device consists of a pipe connected to a mask that provides a constant and stable airflow.

Although the machine effectively treats OSA, it can still cause some problems. These include runny nose, congestion, dry mouth, and high blood pressure. A person who does not use a CPAP machine may feel uncomfortable and experience trouble sleeping because of these issues. So, we have put together some tips to help you overcome these problems. Let’s have a look!

Tips to avoid problems with CPAP machine

  1. Find an appropriate mask to sleep comfortably:

A CPAP machine comprises a mask that you can place over your nose. It comes in different shapes and sizes to suit everyone’s needs. A full face mask covers your mouth and nose and works best for people who breathe through their mouth while sleeping. Another model comes with a nose pillow that is comfortable and can be placed under the nose.

Another thing you should pay attention to when looking for an appropriate mask is size. CPAP masks come in many different designs. So, before buying one, ensure that it fits your face contour.

  1. Get used to the mask slowly to avoid discomfort:

Wearing a CPAP mask can be uncomfortable. So, to get used to it, you should wear the mask only for a short time when you are awake. Then, in the next step, you can wear it with the machine turned on. Once you know what it feels like to breathe through the mask, you can start using the sleep apnea machine during naps. The trick here is to keep trying. Sticking to the mask may help you get used to it in the long run.

  1. Use a humidifier to avoid a dry nose:

A loose, leaky lining can cause a dry nose. If you have to adjust the cover frequently, it means that the size is not appropriate. In this case, you should try to change the mask. However, if the size is not the issue, you can solve the problem by using a heated CPAP machine. Or you can also try using a nasal spray before going to bed.

  1. Practise wearing a mask to treat claustrophobia:

If wearing a mask makes you anxious and claustrophobic, you should start by putting it on only when awake. Start by holding it above your face while not touching any other part. Once you get used to it, you should try really wearing the mask. Then, hold the mask and the string that connects it. Next, turn on the ramp feature. Then, put the strap on and try to sleep with the CPAP mask. You can also try breathing exercises to reduce your anxiety and claustrophobia.

Although the CPAP machine helps patients with sleep apnea to rest better, it has side effects. Use the tips mentioned above to solve problems related to the CPAP machine.
